This is an embarrassing symptom that is hard to talk about with people you are close to, so you aren’t quite sure where to turn. Unless you have been dealing with this problem for days on end, don’t worry, because diarrhea in early pregnancy for a couple of days is normal, but that doesn’t make it any easier to deal with. Let’s discuss this issue a bit further.
Why Diarrhea is Common
Mind you, you may have diarrhea in early pregnancy, but that doesn’t mean you’re having this problem solely because you are pregnant.
Here are some non-pregnancy related reasons:
• A stomach flu
• Intestinal parasites
• Food Poisoning
Maybe it could be something that you ate that is causing the diarrhea. Pineapples, for example, are rich in minerals and vitamins and are so good that sometimes, they can fix stomach infections. However, pineapples are not safe to consume during pregnancy. Some believe that pineapples can cause a woman to have a miscarriage, especially during the early stages. Furthermore, it has an element called bromelain, which causes diarrhea.
Pregnancy Related Causes
Of course, you could be experiencing diarrhea simply because you are pregnant. One reason could be because of your diet change. When a woman finds out she is pregnant, she may make a dramatic change to her diet – this will cause a sudden shift in her food intake that can upset her stomach.
You also have to consider the fact that when you become pregnant, a lot of changes will be taking place in your body and food sensitivities could be amongst those changes. Foods that you were once able to eat may leave you with an upset stomach, gas and cause you to have diarrhea.
When you are pregnant, the doctor will recommend prenatal vitamins, because they are good for you and the unborn child. However, at the same time these vitamins can cause your stomach to get upset, which in return, can lead to diarrhea.
Changes in the hormones can also cause problems to your digestive system. If you believe this is the case slow down. Hormones can speed up your digestive system, which could lead to diarrhea. However, it is more common to have hormone related diarrhea during the later months of pregnancy.
Remedies for Diarrhea in Early Pregnancy
When you are pregnant you may be afraid to take certain medications, because there are things that could harm your baby. In fact, don’t even think about taking that over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medication, unless your doctor has approved it. There are some remedies you can turn to that does not involve any form of medication. If you don’t want to sit around and wait for the diarrhea to go away on its own, here are some remedies you can turn to.
1. Avoid Certain Foods
As we stated before, there are problematic foods that can cause diarrhea. Stay away from those foods that are high in fat, spicy and fried. You should also avoid dairy and foods that are high in fiber.
2. The Changes
Have you made any changes that could have triggered the symptoms? If you started to take a new medication, for example, that could be the cause. It could also be caused by food borne illness, so think about the different foods you have had over the past days so that you can try to figure out if you have been exposed to such illnesses. If you have been constipated for a couple of days, then the diarrhea suddenly happens, yet you feel as if you are bloated, you could have fecal impaction. If you believe you have fecal impaction, you should speak with your doctor as soon as possible. If you believe the medication has been causing the problem, speak with your doctor and see if they could get a different medication for you.
3. Stay Hydrated
You definitely need to stay hydrated. During this time, you need to increase your water intake. Yes, you may want to turn to fruit juice, but you need to avoid sugary drinks – the best thing to help you stay hydrated is, and always will be, water. When you have diarrhea, it can cause you to become dehydrated, which isn’t good for you or the baby. Plus, drinking plenty of water will help flush those impurities you may have in your intestines.
4. A Bland Food Diet
Many recommend a bland food diet that consists of toast, rice, apples and bananas – this is referred to as the “brat diet.” The foods in the “brat diet” are easy to digest and consist of lean protein, such as turkey and cooked vegetables.
When to Go to the Doctor
If you have had diarrhea for over 2 or 3 days and you have tried many remedies to make it stop, it may be time to go speak with your doctor. If you let this problem continue, even if you are trying your best to stay hydrated, you could become severely dehydrated, which as we said before, is never a good thing. We understand, this is an embarrassing symptom, but it’s common and the doctor isn’t going to laugh at you. During your visit with your doctor, he/she will conduct a physical exam and may decide to take some blood in order to determine what has been causing this problem.
