Race for Health September Mail-Out

Update #15 released: Thursday 3, September 2009

Dear Programme Leads,

Hopefully by now you have all been introduced to myself and Louise Sinclair as the new Administration Team for the Race for Health. We are both available to help you with any Race for Health queries on 0151 296 7582 or by email at jessica.bradbury@liverpoolpct.nhs.uk or louise.sinclair@liverpoolpct.nhs.uk.

Ramadan

As you are all aware, Ramadan is currently underway for members of the Islamic Faith. As the Holy Month has fallen during the Summer this year, health concerns have been raised as the length of fasting can be up to 15 hours per day. This is particularly worrying for members of the Muslim community with illnesses such as Diabetes, whom whilst being exempted from fasting, still wish to partake as they feel it is an important part of their faith. We are therefore pleased to be able to offer you a dietary guidance sheet put together by dietitians on behalf of Bradford and Airedale PCT.

Leading Action on Race Equality

On 19 October 2009 in London, Race for Health will host a summit for NHS leaders on tackling race equality and health, chaired by David Nicholson. Keynote Speakers will include Cynthia Bower, Chief Executive of the Care Quality Commission. The afternoon summit will focus leadership and help set out practical ways forward, which will be supported by a Race for Health Guide setting out what NHS organisations must do and how to do it. Participants will be invited to sign a pledge, which others will then be asked to sign in advance of publication.

The publication – a specially commissioned Race for Health Guide “Leading Action on Race Equality and Health” will set out the imperatives for action - what is required by law, regulatory authorities, policy makers and good practice. It will also include examples of successful practice, key ingredients for such success, and input from user groups.

Black History Season

Black History Month has been celebrated in the UK each October for over 30 years. It celebrates different aspects of African and African Caribbean history, culture and life. The focus is generally on music, comedy, performances, educational events, talks, crafts and art. However, our Senior Associate Coordinators feel that Race for Health could make a valuable contribution to the celebrations by identifying and sharing what Race for Health trusts are doing to mark the season; signposting educational resources; publishing information about Black history, related to medicine, health, wellbeing and contributions to science and technology; developing a web resource for signposting and publishing information and developing Race for Health calendar with personalities.

Should this possibility interest you, please contact either David Harris at david.harris@bristolpct.nhs.uk or Errol Francis at errolfrancis@raceforhealth.org.

Further information on Black History Month can be found at:
