Race Equality Scheme
Ealing Primary Care Trust (PCT) provides or commissions all NHS services for the 301,000 people who live in the London Borough of Ealing (2001 Census). The aims of the Equality and Diversity Strategy and Race Equality Scheme are: -
To create fair access to all services that are provided directly by the PCT, commissioned by the PCT or delivered by independent contractors including GP's.
To create an organisational culture in which diversity is welcomed and celebrated; and to develop a workforce that reflects the diversity in the local population.
To comply wholeheartedly with the law and NHS policy relating to equality and diversity, including the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000. This will mean tackling unfair and unlawful discrimination on the basis of factors that include race, ethnicity, nationality, colour, gender, marital status, caring responsibilities, disability, age, religion, history of mental illness, sexual orientation, or history of offending.
To make clear commitments about diversity and equality to patients, the public, staff and partners (including GP's, the London Borough of Ealing and community organisations) and to involve partners in monitoring and delivering the strategy.
Equality statement
Ealing PCT aims to treat people as individuals in accordance with their personal health needs. We will not base assumptions about a person's needs on the fact of their belonging to a particular group or community. We aim to make services sensitive and appropriate to the diverse cultures, languages and individual needs of patients. We aim to reduce inequalities in health, in partnership with all sectors and communities. As a commissioner of health services, we will work with providers and contractors to ensure that valuing diversity and promoting fair access are core elements of care. We are committed to becoming a model employer, welcoming, valuing and learning from the diversity of our staff. We will tackle unfair or unlawful discrimination on the basis of any irrelevant factors, in particular race, ethnicity, nationality, colour, gender, marital status, housing status, disability, age, religion, history of mental illness, sexual orientation, or history of offending. The PCT recognises that some groups face particular risk of discrimination in health services. Such groups include Black and minority ethnic communities, refugees and asylum seekers, travellers, homeless people and people with disabilities. We aim to be a force for positive change in public services, to lead by good example and to learn from best practice. We will use limited funds to secure the best possible outcomes for all, without detriment to particular groups.
