A really useful tool
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) have recently published a multi-lingual and illustrated phrasebook, covering over 100 common questions and phrases used in communication between patients and staff in hospital.
Each phrase is translated into 15 different languages. The languages are: Arabic Polish Bengali Portuguese Chinese Punjabi Czech Somali Farsi Swahili French Turkish Gujarati Urdu Hindi Many of the phrases are also represented pictorially, making it a useful tool in communication with patients who may have difficulties with speech.
CD copies of the aid are available allowing you to upload the resource on your intranet for all your practitioners to use, as well as allowing you to print off and utilise the pages or sections of most use, possibly laminating the sheets where appropriate.
A list of the phrases and questions in the aid, as well as some sample pages can be veiwed here.
