Exploring stigma and discrimination towards mental health problems with BME communities in Glasgow
Colleagues may be interested to see the Mosaics of Meaning: Summary Report 2007 Exploring stigma and discrimination towards mental health problems with black and minority ethnic communities in Glasgow.
This report is a summary of work undertaken between 2005 and 2007 to research and address the stigma associated with mental health problems amongst black and minority ethnic (BME) communities in Glasgow.
As well as providing an overview of the work, it also reflects some of the findings of the full Mosaics of Meaning report. That report has been the foundation of an innovative programme of social marketing and community interventions. The report, prepared by a partnership of organisations led by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, has two major and complementary sections:
A report of the findings of community focus groups that were conducted with Pakistani, Indian, Chinese, African and Caribbean communities in Glasgow
A global literature review of attitudes towards mental well-being and mental health problems in Pakistani, Indian, Chinese, African and Caribbean communities (which was undertaken by the Centre for Ethnicity and Health at the University of Central Lancashire).
The full and summary reports are also available electronically in the Library of Resources (under Campaign Information) at www.seemescotland.org and also through the right hand column of the Mental health page under Topics on the NHS Health Scotland website http://www.healthscotland.com/ (or direct at http://www.healthscotland.com/mental-health.aspx)
Contact details for more information and discussion are included at the end of the summary report. The partnership would be interested in comments on the work or suggestions for linkages with other work in this field being done elsewhere in the UK or beyond. These can be routed through:
