A Unique Campaign aimed at South Asians

The SACHE campaign was launched on 13th Dec 2007 by Virendra Sharma MP, at the House of Commons.

The South Asian Community Health Education (“SACHE” meaning “truth” in many dialects) Campaign takes healthcare professionals directly into temples, mosques, gurudwaras and community centres to deliver health education to combat health inequalities. The education sessions include lectures, question/answer sessions about heart health (e.g. diet and exercise) and a Bollywood style comedy about heart disease.

This campaign is unique: education is being delivered directly to communities, usually in their first language, by health professionals from those communities.

Heart Disease – a major killer of UK South Asians Heart disease, diabetes and stroke are the biggest killers in the UK’s South Asian community.

South Asians are at a 50% increased risk of dying of a heart attack compared with the UK’s White Europeans. People can make simple lifestyle changes to reduce their risk. The campaign highlights some of these easy steps.
