Fair Society, Healthy Lives: The Marmot Review

Written by admin on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 09:45

The Marmot Review was commissioned in 2008, by Alan Johnson Secretary of State for Health, to identify health inequalities in England and provide evidence to underpin future practice.  The Review follows a report by the Global Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH), entitled Closing the Gap in a Generation, published by the World Health Organisation in 2008, which indicated a need for nation-specific strategies in combating health inequalities in the quest for good global health.  The review, officially published on 12 February, was chaired by Professor Sir Michael Marmot, from University College London and was specifically asked to

·               Identify the evidence most relevant to underpinning future policy and action regarding England’s health-inequality challenges

·               Show how this evidence can be translated into practice

·               Advise on possible objectives and measures, building on the experience of the current PSA target on infant mortality and life expectancy

·               Publish a report at the end of 2009 of the review’s work that will contribute to the development of a post-2010 health-inequalities strategy

The findings of the review are intended to inform a post-2010 health inequalities strategy for England.

A number of people have expressed concern regarding the lack of detailed consideration of ethnic inequalities in health within the Marmot Review.  You can read our thoughts here:
