Pain between shoulder blades may come and go, but there are a lot of different things that can cause this kind of pain.

In many cases, people suffer very fleeting pain between the shoulder blades. It doesn’t persist long enough for them to worry. If you notice that you’re feeling this discomfort on a fairly regular basis, then you might want to pay attention to the tips below.

Any sort of muscle pain is usually par for the course. Even if you’re not a particularly physically active person, it’s not uncommon to develop slight pains every once in a while or even a twitch here and there. That’s just how your muscles work. And as you age, your muscles go through these really temporary pains.

Causes of Pain between Shoulder Blades

You have to remember that there’s a big difference between a slight discomfort or a twitching kind of pain, and real pain. If you’re noticing that the pain is deep in the muscle or radiates out, then it might not actually be from the muscle or skeletal items in that area. It might be a symptom of something more profound.

Possible causes can range from cancer on either the muscle or the bones in that region of your body, to torticollis. When you twist your neck improperly or you move in a jilting motion, your muscles may line up the wrong way. This can lead to muscle tension that twists your neck. This can be very painful. It often takes a painfully long time for the muscles to regain proper position.

Physical Trauma

Other causes include physical trauma. Maybe you play a lot of sports. If you get hit the wrong way or you fall down, you might end up with a rotator cuff injury, a broken collar bone, or even a separated shoulder. All these factor into a pain between the shoulder blades. Of course, shoulder separation or a really bad rotator cuff injury is more painful. It can be very, very painful.

Herniated Disk

Another type of injury that can produce this type of pain is a herniated disk in the area. There are disks in your spine, and if you move the wrong your way or your posture is really bad for a long period of time, these disks might slip out of proper alignment and produce a tremendous amount of pain.

Radiating Gallbladder Disease

Pain between your shoulder blades can also be due to a radiating gallbladder disease. Your shoulder blades are usually high up, but any organ in the region beneath your lungs can suffer from a disease that leads to pain radiating to that upper torso region.

Poor Posture

Of course, poor posture can lead to pain between the shoulder blades. This is especially true if you are a very heavy person. You’re putting a lot of weight on your skeleton, and if something is out of line or if you just move the wrong way, your poor posture can catch up to you and produce persistent discomfort.

In terms of radiating pain, causes can include potential heart attacks. If you’re experiencing the onset of a heart attack, this can be manifested in the form of pain between your shoulder blades.
Osteoarthritis is also a common cause of this type of pain. In this case, when the calcium lining of your bones start to strip, the remaining jagged surface can really be murder on the tissues surrounding your skeleton. This can happen in certain parts of the body and it’s quite painful when it happens in the torso region.

Treatments

If you are feeling persistent or long term pain between your shoulder blades, you might want to consider massage therapy. By simply getting your back massaged on a regular basis, the muscle might get realigned so it puts less pressure on your skeletal system.

You might also want to change your habits. For example, if you play a lot of competitive sports and you get injured a lot, you might want to dial that down a little bit. Also, pay attention to your posture. If you have a bad posture, you might want to start standing straight up and making sure that when you sit, your posture is well aligned.

Don’t expect this to happen overnight. Habits do die hard, but with enough consistent practice, you should be able to pick up healthier posture habits.

The same applies to your movement habits. If you move a certain way that leads to your spinal column shifting its center of gravity, this might put unnecessary pressure on your skeletal frame. By extension, this can lead to muscle pain. While movement issues might seem like a very minor issue that only requires changes in movement, this is easier said than done. Most people have developed certain movement habits and in many cases, unless there’s a tremendous amount of pain involved, new habits are very hard to learn.

To fix this problem, you might want to adopt a new way of walking. Everybody has their own distinct style, but you might want to change yours so you can avoid discomfort or shoulder blade pain. Also, you might want to consult your doctor and pick up some back exercises. There are exercises for your lower back, mid back, and upper back that can help relieve pressure.

But please remember, you can’t just do these exercises one time and experience tremendous results. More likely, you have to stick to routine back exercises until you get the relief you’re looking for.
