Bradford and Airedale PCT ... International recruitment of dentists from Poland

Summary:

The three Bradford PCTs worked in collaboration with the West Yorkshire Workforce Development Confederation, the Yorkshire Dental Deanery and the Department of Health to pilot the recruitment of Polish dentists into general dental practices in the area.

Poland has a surplus of dentists and an inter-government agreement has been reached in order to permit the recruitment drive.

Action:

Candidates are rigorously assessed in Poland by Methods Consulting, contracted by the Department of Health to manage the recruitment process and Paragona, their Polish based partners. Interviews take place in the UK and following a job offer candidates attend an eight week intensive induction programme in Poland to learn about the British healthcare system and address learning needs.

Outcome:

Through working together, the Bradford PCTs were able to facilitate the recruitment process for five polish dental practitioners. In the summer of 2005 three Bradford PCTs each welcomed a Polish dentist into a PDS practice. This aimed to improve access to NHS dentistry for the population of Bradford.

Additional:

The project builds on our 2003 international GP recruitment in collaboration with the Department of Health, Yorkshire Deanery and the West Yorkshire Workforce Development Confederation. For this project we worked across three PCT's in West Yorkshire in order to bring five GPs from Spain to work in the region.
