Bradford and Airedale PCT ... Smile with the Prophet: oral health programme

Summary:

To strengthen community involvement through places of worship, so raising awareness of oral health issues.

Action:

  • Develop and pilot an oral health resource pack, which includes a tooth brushing element and can be linked to the religious, cultural and ritualistic part of hygiene.
  • Recruit mosques within City tPCT, to participate in the programme.
  • Provide oral health training to all mosque teachers.

Outcome:

  • Mosque resources developed including:
  • A mosque teaching syllabus produced linking oral health to the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh).
  • A green logo bag, containing toothbrush, toothpaste and information letter for parents and an activity book provided for each child.
  • A resource box produced, containing dental and Islamic resources.
  • Introduction of the mosque programme at nine mosques and Islamic Madressas within Bradford City tPCT.

Additional:

  • Four additional mosques were targeted in January 2006.
  • To promote the mosque programme at the UK Islamic Mission National Mosque Open Day 2006.
