Bradford and Airedale PCT ... Speech & Language Therapy Positive Action Training Scheme
Summary:
The minority ethnic communities are under represented in the speech and language therapy profession. We therefore promoted the profession and devised a training scheme which included an access to higher education courses and entry to the SaLT training course at Leeds Metropolitan University.
Action:
We recruited four local people from the minority ethnic community. The trainees studied part time to complete the access to higher education course while working alongside the Sure Start programmes and gaining experience of the SaLT profession. Mentoring and support has been given via the speech and language service and the PCT black and minority ethnic group
Outcomes:
All four trainees have successfully completed the access to higher education course, one chose to leave the scheme and three trainees are now studying at Leeds Metropolitan University and continue to be mentored by the Bradford Speech and Language Therapy Service and to gain additional work experience during the university vacations.
