Bradford and Airedale PCT ... Therapeutic group work
Summary:
The need was identified for therapeutic group work to address basic mental health needs, and provide the opportunity for clients to learn about themselves through, and in relation to, others.
One of the areas identified by some Asian clients who were divorced or separated, was the stigma attached to them and their difficulties managing conflicting emotions arising from their isolation and social exclusion.
Lack of assertiveness was a common theme emerging from client contact.
Both of these groups offered a safe environment in which clients could explore ways to increase awareness, confidence and skills in relating to others in building for the future.
Action:
- Appointment of a member of staff responsible for taking a lead in this area of work.
- Staff training in group work skills.
- Development of programme of group work.
- Collaboration with other agencies to co-facilitate this area of work.
- Pilot studies to assess effectiveness of focus for groups.
Outcome:
A ten week course 'New Life, New Challenge' for Asian women who are divorced or separated was adapted from a Relate programme and successfully piloted in 2003. It operates in an appropriate mix of two or more languages. The group was run again in 2005 and there are plans for future groups.
An eight week assertiveness programme for men and women has been developed. It was successfully piloted in 2003 and is now offered on a regular basis.
CTRT continues to work in conjunction with other agencies to expand the programme of groups offered, to provide a cohesive programme of therapeutic group work and to monitor and evaluate those already on offer.
Additional:
Positive feedback has been received from women who have attended New Life, New Challenge, and a particular theme has been about meeting and sharing with others and rebuilding confidence and self-esteem.
"I received others company. I gained trust and was able to share my problems."
"I was able to share my problems. I was not able to share this even with my own siblings."
"I used to feel inferior and now I feel a little better."
"I received help to gain the hope which I lost."
