Information in languages other than English and for ethnic groups

EQUIP - Electronic Quality Information for Patients

This NHS sponsored web site provides a fairly comprehensive listing of organisations and web sites where users can find support for speakers of languages other than English, including some designed specifically for refugees, and others for particular ethnic or cultural groups. While some are American and others Australian, the majority hold content of value to UK practice, especially in terms of self-care for specific health conditions. Most can be viewed in English to assess the relevance of their content, and overseas sources may provide health promotion resources in rarer languages such as Amharic, Somali, Thai or Farsi. The site warns that while the sites have been assessed for overall quality, there have been no checks on individual translations.

Specific sections provide access to materials , telephone help-lines, and organisations providing support regarding drug and alcohol addictions and AIDS/HIV in minority languages or designed for members of specific groups. There are also links to collections of materials organised under a number of clinical or user-group headings such as Cancer, Diabetes, Disability support, Eye disorders, and oral health.
