Heart Disease and South Asians: New guide to combat heart disease in the South Asian community

The Department of Health has published a guide aimed at cutting Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) in the South Asian Community. Heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK and South Asians living in the UK are 50% more likely to suffer from the condition than the population as a whole.

The best practice guide will support service providers such as strategic health authorities, primary care trusts and hospitals in working with communities to improve health and access to resources. The guide has been developed with the British Heart Foundation and provides case studies and resources from across the country as to how best prevent and treat heart disease amongst the South Asian community. The initiative contributes to the commitment by the Department of Health to reduce the gap in health inequalities and support the Public Service Agreement in reducing heart related mortality by 40% in people under 75.
