The health status of gypsies & travellers in England : summary of a report to the Department of Health 2004

A report on research from the University of Sheffield, identifying inequalities in health status between Gypsy Traveller and non-Gypsy Traveller populations. Mental health, stroke, and heart disease were among the health areas addressed, together with the health experiences, beliefs, attitudes, and the perceived barriers to service access or use for the study population. Quantitative results show that Gypsy Travellers have significantly poorer health status and more self-reported symptoms of ill-health than some other disadvantaged groups in the UK. Reported health problems in the study population are between twice and five times more prevalent than those in the UK general population. The findings show that currently the health needs of Gypsy Travellers are not being met, and possible options for improving access and services are reviewed.
