Providing HIV Services for African People (2001)

This guide provides information for workers who provide HIV services to African people living in the UK. It should be

most especially useful to individuals or organisations who wish to implement, improve or review their services: Health professionals, staff in social services, HIV organisations (including African and Black organisations), researchers, commissioners and anyone newly providing services for African people. The range of services addressed here could be hospital or community based and include advice, counselling, care and HIV prevention initiatives.

It is also hoped that the guide can help workers to further understand some of the needs of African people. Most of the issues addressed in this guide are drawn from:

  • Research in health service use and sexual health behaviour of African people living in the UK.
  • Seminars and conferences organised by the African Health Promotion Team at Terrence Higgins Trust.
  • Views of African people who use Terrence Higgins Trust services.

This guide purposely avoids the ‘recipe book’ approach. Its ultimate goal is to encourage workers to think pro-actively about ways of providing appropriate and equitable services for African people.
